What is this United Airlines Flight 3411 thing?

What, you've never volunteered to have your face smashed and dragged out of an airplane?

@Pakoonsaidin@PakoonSo does anyone know how they chose the "volunteers"? The last one to enter the plane or the last one who bought a ticket or what?
"Random" apparently.
In either case overbooking is bullshit.
It's bad enough North American airline service has been in free fall for 40 years, the contract you agree to when you purchase a ticket for a service is worthless.

I read that they didn't actually overbook the flight, they just needed 4 seats for their standby-crew.

They've sold more tickets on the flight than there were seats available to be sold.
The problem is airlines are so focused on flying maximum capacity that they won't leave four empty seats on every flight on the chance they don't have employees to ship from point A to B
Overbooking is very common like you said but usually they would offer points or free tickets to get on an another flight. I had $100 given to me by Continental for catching a later flight. Funny thing is my next flight was a direct one and the seat I gave up had a stop which ended up being delayed. Both flight arrived at the final destination at the same time.

Air canada sold us an impossible itinerary, and they knew it was impossible.
It would have been one that we could have made our flights at only one airport in the country (YYZ) but we flew through Montreal instead.
They put us on standby and gave us a $10 gift voucher.
What a great deal.

Yeah, I once volunteered to get on a next available flight instead of the Finnair flight I had bought tickets on and I only had to wait for something like one hour more to get on the next available flight but I was upgraded to business class instead of the economy and I also got bonus points added to my OneWorld card.

So what plane was it? I mean, was it so small that there weren't any jump seats on the plane?

Today we had a mother on board travelling with four little boys. Two of the boys were just babies. Naturally one cannot travel with two babies on one's lap, so we had to solve the dilemma of missing lap, otherwise it would have been a no go for mom and the kids. Luckily we had our positioning crew on board and wonderful Tom took the task of being the extra-lap.
