But this is almost painful! For ~750$, I looked but can't find a single catch (apart from the lack of case). All the right bits included.

Looks great. I wish I could play the guitar, I have no idea what good bits to look for.

I worked with two guys who played the guitar very well. One never had any lessons yet was able to pick up the guitar and start playing with very little practice. Just hearing the notes and figuring out which stringy things made them was enough. The other guy was an aeronautical engineer. He too picked up playing it quickly but needed to know why each string made each note. He was always searching for a mathimatical reason for the music scale to be the way it was and how it related to a piano. I'm sure Tigger has an equation for it.

My son is a talented guitarist and though not well-off by nearly any definition (think "starving musician,) he has a small collection of Les Paul guitars, the most valuable of which is worth about 10 Gs.

He is self-taught and has a good natural ear. He can listen to a melody with guitar riffs and start playing immediately thereafter.

This is his latest, and to date, best gig . . . one that has not got off the ground:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ex-black-sabbath-drummer-bill-ward-launches-new-band-day-of-errors-20160607

Joe has been playing in a trio - Day or Errors - with Bill Ward and Nick Diltz. But . . .

Bill has been having some health issues and it's looking like this may not go anywhere. Time will tell I suppose.

It's nearly impossible for even talented musicians to support themselves in the musical business these days.

My son is the guy on the left:

Nick in the middle and Bill on the right, of course. ;-)

I wonder if he tied his hair in a ponytail if he'd look like Penn Gilette

Possibly ;-)

Now if he only had Jillette's money as well . . .

So they are touring to try to get a fan-base? I think it's great they are three, the sound doesn't turn to random mush.

So I've been to a Black Sabbath concert where the opening act for the opening act was Black Label Society, clearly a very popular "heavy metal" band. I'd much prefer having to listen to your son than to them.

My step brother is a good guitar player as well. He studied at some famous guitar school in California and was in a few bands that were moderately successful. He got a shot with one of the big ones in the grunge era, but it sort of fell apart. Unfortunately he got sucked into the drug culture and his life spiraled downhill until he hit rock bottom at some point. He was basically starting over from scratch in his mid 30s when he finally kicked it and fortunately has a decent job now and got married a few years ago.

A short version of a more complex tale . . .

Since becoming estranged from Black Sabbath, for reasons I can tell, but then I'd have to hunt you down and kill you all, Bill Ward formed the Bill Ward Band and he did tour, but this got to be very expensive. One has to self-fund tours and hope to make the money back as one goes along. I think BWB traveled with nearly 30 people.

For a long time, Bill wanted to form a smaller unit so that, not only the band, but the required entourage would be less unwieldy, more compact and so DoE came into existence. Think Cream. Bill and Joe were introduced about 5 years ago and they spent lot of time writing before forming the band and having Nick join up (Nick's other band is All Hail the Yeti.) Nick's dad is the famous photographer and musician, Henry Diltz.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Diltz

Anyway, Bill has had health issues and this put everything on hold for now, though they are talking about touring in the fall.

To answer tigger's question, Bill Ward already has a following, so anything that they may do will have it's start on Bill's reputation as one of the better rock drummers of all time. Rolling Stone has him at #42 of 100.

Loudwire has him as # 8

It's pretty subjective after all.

The trajectory you describe above is, unfortunately, far too typical and it often does not end well.

My son has avoided the drug scene so he has that going for him, but his path in life pretty much blocked him from having a family of his own. Plenty of womenz, but as soon as they wanted to nest and start a family, he would move on.

Hehe, this one of the things I like in playing the harmonica instead : even a nice one you'd buy just for how it looks wouldn't be more than 80-90, worst case.

Yes, but guitars are... guitars! This is complicated to explain! And that's a perfectly operational LP for under a grand!

And the bits that I say are correct:

  1. Slim neck. I'm not super sure what this is but it might be close to what my SG has, in which case, perfect.
  2. Mahogany body, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard, maple top. That's how goH intended a LP to be made.
  3. No binding on body: I actually like that, it looks cool without the plastic ring.
  4. Satin nitrocellulose finish. It's common to have it glossy, but since it's nitrocellulose, you can easily polish it to perfect non-plasticky shine. The finish is thin, letting the guitar wood dry out well.

"Under a grand". :lulz: Guitard players are bourgeois falling for money-craving bitches with nice hips... They're funny. (Until you've seen classic piano players, I guess. Then they're just normal guys with a cheap suburban hobby.)
