Anyone own a 3D printer?

I've been reading about them and have been trying to work my way through the system setup and programming. Not that easy when you don't have the printer or software in front of you, but trying to figure it all out keeps me off the road and out of the bars. I started looking into them back in November and found the basic set-up is somewhat easy, depending on the model, and found many catalogs with free files for objects which may be helpful or entertaining. Lots of junk to print that I'll never use.

Then there's the whole CAD software used for actually designing the printable items. That's a class by itself and possibly not needed since many of the items in the catalogs are scalable in very dimension and color. They're free to use but you just can't profit off someone else's design.

I found in the past, there's probably 100 items I bought off eBay for cars or projects because the original part broke or got lost and is no longer available or outrageously priced, only to find someone 3D prints them out of better material and sells them for $5. Perfect example is my old Boston electric pencil sharpener. The gears cracked and fell apart. Quick search and there they are, hot off the printer.

Any have/use one? I think I recall Pakoon used them on a regular basis. I was just talking to my dentist about these and he said he was buying one to make temporary teeth and crowns. Very common now to do that now.

I think the cheap ones can't print with the better materials so you will have stuff that breaks a lot. But yeah, the tech has come a long way and they are using them to make rocket parts now. If you don't plan to use it often, you can probably just find the CAD plan online and order the part though.

I want one but haven't been able to justify the price yet (plan to buy one regardless when the boy is a little older). Keep seeing YouTube shorts of really clever shit you can make with them.

Well now I'm finding out that humidity plays a big factor in the quality of the printed item. The typical PLA filament absorbs moisture and can cause many irregularities in the surface or integrity of the item. Most claim the room needs to be at 45% humidity or less and they often have a dedicated space with a room dehumidifier. Houston's outside humidity is between 65% and 100%, inside I keep it around 55%

I had an Ender back when, but I sold it to a friend because I wasn't using it. I’ve been exploring options recently for more serious endeavors, but I don’t have any real experience with modern 3D printing. It’s really come a long way from what feels like just a few years ago.

Bambu Labs seems to be the right direction for what I’m looking for today, printing flexible rugged polymers that can withstand high heat.

@Blanks Bambu is very popular now for all levels, beginner through expert. Another one I've been reading about is the Flashforge AD5X . It had a few problems when it initially came out but the manufacturer corrected them with software updates. The latest review sound much better.

How can anyone say no to printing one of these?

Life is too short.

Every now and then, I tease at learning CAD/CAM, but I just haven't made the effort.

Have a look at Shapeways if you aren't already familiar. If you can draw the part, they can print it in almost anything.

https://www.shapeways.com/

Stainless steel, bras, bronze, gold, silver . . .

The metals are something like 85% to 90+ % metal with binders. The metal products are all machinable.

@Jam I have not heard of them, thanks!

There's still a few old cars out there that need transmission parts or small fittings that are no longer available. Not sure what the copyright issues would be if the car company is long gone, but making those items might pay off.

My sister bought one, absolutely loves it

Our Christmas presents were all 3D printed items

I shall say no more, so as to not sound ungrateful

Besides, it would be indelicate to continue the discussion.

Think of all the specialized Lego blocks you could print. You could build or step on anything!

i looked at them to print Lego parts ages ago, and while you could even get the cad designs the printers weren't accurate enough to get that click right so i never bothered but, now?

and jam auto cad is piss easy to learn ...it really is!
