One of the nice things about becoming a parent is the genuine joy you get from people you care about also having children. A friend just had their first baby and it feels like really good news whereas before it was like, "hey yeah that's great, congrats" but there wasn't a lot of feeling behind it.

Not sure if this is random news or a random thought. I was just burying a dead bird my youngest found in the garden, so the cat wouldn't bring it in. I dug a hole, picked the corpse up on the spade and dropped it in the hole. Think it was a starling. As I started to fill the hole in, respectfully and gently, and talked to my daughter about prayers and words for those who have passed on, the corpse let out a little cry. Left with no other option, I quickly filled in the hole and then drove my spade in - hard - four, five, six times into where the bird's head and torso was. I did not look at my daughter. I thought I'd got away with it. We returned to the house in silence.
"Why did you kill the bird daddy?" came the question.
Hmmm

You spelled that wrong. It's spelled "syphilis" and "gonorrhea"
Dammit. I'll never trust an American doctor again!

First the prison ships in New York harbor . . .
. . . and now this . . .
Usually when we get a snake I'm fighting the fucking thing before I'm even able to think about it. This one however slid into our kitchen and hid under a bunch of stuff. First I didn't know where it was and only had my frightened wife's intel of "it's as thick as my forearm" which just made the whole thing really unnerving. Finally when I did see it, I didn't know how to get it out in a controlled manner. Last thing I wanted was a) it biting me, or b) running to the room where our kid was. Only thing I could think of was to set up a camera so we could be sure it left and then go out to dinner.
When we got back an hour later, I reviewed the footage and thankfully it had only waited 15 minutes before it left. Unfortunately it went behind the camera so I don't know if it's in one of the back rooms now. Hopefully all the commotion we made has given it second thoughts about taking up residence with us.
So I post the video on Facebook and ask if anyone could identify the species. Chhunly (who virtually lived in a forest as a kid) only replied, "Oh! Brother. Be careful" which was pretty disconcerting. Just now he replied again, "Praise God. It is not a poison snack. However it is very cruel".
It is very cruel? Cruel? WTF? I think I preferred it when I only thought it might be venomous.
